THE MØRE MARITIME CLUSTER
Norway is home for a tiny 0,1% of the world’s population, but controls over 5% of the world’s commercial fleet and has the second largest offshore fleet in the world.
= A WORLD CLASS MARITIME CLUSTER
Most of Norway’s strength in the field of advanced marine operations is concentrated within an hour’s drive from the picturesque town of Ålesund on the west coast of Norway. The region is home for an impressive constellation of over 220 leading maritime companies and training, research and finance institutions that form one of very few complete maritime clusters in the world.
Over 75% of the world’s large, hi-tech offshore vessels are designed by design companies in the area. 40% of the world’s most advanced offshore fleet is controlled by the region’s ship-owners, and the shipyards are building the most complex and sophisticated vessels.
Due to its leading position and its strong global presence, the cluster was awarded the prestigious status as Norwegian Centre of Expertise – Maritime by the Norwegian government. The main reason for that is the cluster’s winning mix of high pace of innovation, prototype orientation, competition, informal communication, cooperation and unique know-how within the field of advanced marine operations for the global offshore industry.
